Math Games & Activities

To relieve some of the stress of helping your student practice math skills, try using a math game or activity. The games listed here were either tutor-created to quickly print and use (for free) or they are professionally-made games that parents and tutors (and their students!) find effective.

Here are some ways to practice the math facts:

1) Using a timer, have the student take all or part of the test. Keep the tests to show your student that he is progressing.

2) Split up the problems into tic-tac-toe grids. Using two colors, answer the questions with the student in tic-tac-toe fashion.

3) You (parent or tutor) can answer the questions, deliberately answering some of them wrong. Ask the student to find your errors.

Counting, Addition, and Subtraction Skills
If your student is struggling to add or subtract basic facts as quickly as her classmates are, try some of these activities. Click here for Counting, Addition, and Subtraction Skill Support

Pre-Algebra and Algebra
Capture the Flag Directions: use a deck of cards for the number values (or use 3 dice). Draw three cards (or roll all of the dice) and add, subtract, multiply, or divide the numbers in any combination to come up with as many values as possible. Color in the squares for those numbers. The player to get as many squares as possible is the winner. Example: You draw/roll 3, 6, and 1(ace). In one turn you can do all of these problems: 3+6+1=10; 3x6x1=18; 3x(6+1)=21; (6/3)x1=2; (6/3)-1=1, etc. On that same turn, you can color in the squares 10, 18, 21, 2, 1, etc.

What's Your Problem This game is designed to make you practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. You will also do conversions (such as change inches to feet). It’s a lot of figuring things out, but 1) you get to make up part of the game and 2) it’s better than doing a workbook. Grade range: 5th - adult. 04 - 12

Number Nabber Multiplication Game

Island Colonizer Purpose: Practice +, 1, x, /. Needed: Deck of cards or 3 dice, different colored pen for each player (2-4 players). Goal: Each circled number is an island. Colonize as many islands as possible. At the game’s end, player with the most islands wins and rules entire region. Directions: Put cards facedown in a pile and draw 3 cards (or roll all 3 dice) and add, subtract, multiply, or divide the numbers in any combination to get every answer you can. Each answer lets you colonize that island; fill it in with your color. If it’s already colored in, you forfeit that number. But, if you draw/roll 3 of the same number, use the numbers AND take over (color in) 1 opponent island. Example: You draw/roll 3, 6, 1 (ace). In 1 turn you can do all of these: 3+6+1=10; 3x6x1=18; 3x(6+1)=21; (6/3)x1=2; (6/3)-1=1, etc. In that one turn, you colonize (color in) the islands of 10, 18, 21, 2, 1, etc.
